Dengue in Guanacaste and Grecia

Aedes aegypti

Aedes aegypti mosquito also know as the Yellow Fever mosquito from Africa is invasive to Latin America and spreads Dengue.

The annual rainy season in Costa Rica brings an increased risk of Dengue, and this year the country has seen a 300% increase in cases according to Teletica News. While it is a good idea to take precautions against mosquitoes, which carry the disease the outbreaks of Dengue are normally limited to specific areas in Costa Rica.

Presently the hot zones are in Guanacaste, specially the town of Santa Cruz, which is just north of Nicoya and more recently in Grecia. According to a report in Al Dia there have been 100 confirmed cases of Dengue in Grecia, and infections have been reported in all districts of the canton.

During the same period last year there were only 15 registered cases, which represents a significant outbreak. Grecia is home to an expatriate community, and those living in the area should take care to remove possible sources of mosquitoes on their property and also use repellent.

The Santa Cruz area of the Guanacaste peninsula is a  more isolated area, however the above video shows those affected by the outbreak.
