Living in a foreign country has a tendency to draw expatriates together, especially in business relationships that have an element of friendship. Of course when an expat friend cuts and dyes his hair to match your appearance and gets increasingly involved in business affairs a person has to be careful.

Keep in mind that many details can come out in a bar room conversation, and knowing where to find the books for a corporation can be like handing over the keys to the kingdom, especially when you live in a foreign country where people frequently come and go.

It turns out that Allan Duckworth read the warning signs correctly with respect to his six week relationship with confessed serial killer, William Dathan Holbert. He got out of Jaco just as the friend known at the time as “Wild Bill” Cortez was planning to kill him, assume his identity and flip his property in Puerto Viejo.

According to Don Winner, what Allan Duckworth didn’t know at the time was that,

Holbert and Reese had just finished pouring a cement slab over their most recent victim, and they had decided it was time to get the hell out of Puerto Viejo before someone put two and two together.

After six weeks Duckworth sensed mortal danger from the friend who had traveled with him to Jaco and knew so much about his business on the other side of Costa Rica in Puerto Viejo. Duckworth fled the country so quickly that he regrets leaving behind his dog, but also figures the hasty departure prevented him from becoming another victim.

Joesph Freconna also sensed something amiss when concrete mysteriously appeared over the dirt foundation of his rental property near Puerto Viejo. The slab measured 10 feet by 6 feet and 18 inches deep, however with an irregular surface indicative of a hastily done job in secret. It was so suspicious that Freconna called his Costa Rican attorney who suggested he had an overactive imagination.

Sure enough when it became necessary to tear up the concrete a body was discovered with at least $10,000 in gold jewelery. Apparently theft wasn’t the motive, and the identity of the person has yet to be discovered.

Did you know Big Bill in Jaco?

According to Don Winner it has now been confirmed that Holbert rented the home in Puerto Viejo where the gruesome discovery was made, and while the Spanish speaking media has yet to report on these events a logical person can conclude there is a high probability that William Holbert left victims behind in Costa Rica before moving onto Panama.

There are still many questions left unanswered about Holbert’s activities in Costa Rica, which we now know took place between March and June of 2007. The body under the concrete slab remains unidentified, although examination suggests a tall white male. An expat named “Gary” who introduced Duckworth to Holbert matches that description and has yet to come forward.

The local Remax office in Jaco rented property to Holbert under an alias in April or May of 2007. Did you know “Big Bill” when he was in Jaco or Puerto Viejo? Are there any more missing expats. If you have any information, these please contact Don Winner.
