After the Rain Pot Holes and Land Slides
This year the rainy season has been particularly heavy and anyone driving should be careful to avoid pot holes and places where the road has been washed out. Fortunately there is a new GPS system available in Costa Rica that tracks the positions of these major road hazards and can plot a course around them.
According to the video you can totally avoid streets with pot holes or “pot holes with streets”. Unfortunately routing to avoid pot holes can add substantial travel time as many of the roads in Costa Rica are now showing the effects of the rainy season.
It’s also a good idea to go slowly around those blind curves because there might just be a big “lane departure” on the other side. Read more about this photo in Casey’s article on the Cerro to San Isidro highway.
Caution when approaching bridges is important as well as sometimes the road on a bridge can wash out as well.
The following video takes a look at two of the largest pot holes currently in San Jose.
The video starts with a pot hole 2.2m in diameter and 15m in depth that ate a taxi in Desamparados. The second pot hole 1.46 meters in depth has a tree growing in the middle.
