153 Leatherback turtle eggs were saved

Thanks to patrolling operations in the beaches near Barra Pacuare, the looting of 153 Leatherback turtle –one of the most endangered species- eggs was prevented.

The Coast Guard staff located two nests and sent them to a hatchery run by environmentalist organizations with which it has a strategic alliance for the protection of maritime resources.
The chief of Pacuare station, Luis Jirón, reported that in this case the eggs are in the hands of the non governmental organization Widecast.

Thanks to those efforts, during the current spawning season 686 eggs have been rescued. For example, last week, in Barra del Matina, two suspects were arrested for looting 101 eggs, which were later sent to Mondonguillo biological reserve.
