200 consecutive days producing and using renewable energy in Costa Rica

On Saturday, Costa Rica reached 200 consecutive days using electricity produced from renewable sources.

This was confirmed by the Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE) by a publication made in its social networks.

To give an example, in August up to 80% of power came from water.

The National Energy Plan is drawing a new horizon for the country, which is committed to the decarburization of the economy, seeking to be the first carbon neutral country in the world by 2021.

But despite the positivism regarding renewable energy, the eventual creation of two plants that would generate electricity using fossil fuels is in the medium-term plans.

According to the institute, those plants are ‘very important’ for an energy generation system based on components from renewable sources.

The plan designed by the ICE extends to 2023. However, the company argues that there is a lot of uncertainty and the construction of these new units is yet to be confirmed.
