22 university projects reached communities in the country

Today, students at the University of Costa Rica (UCR) will present projects focused on social actions. They were developed in different communities from the 7 provinces. The projects were completely created and executed by the students. 5 of them will be recognized for their work and their effectiveness in the beneficiary communities.

In addition, students have already submitted 58 initiatives to carry them out in 2017.

The 5 most outstanding projects are:

-Building, creating and learning: risk management in my school (Puriscal): it is an Anthropology students’ initiative. They generated spaces for reflection and action with the students from Liceo de Puriscal, institutions and community. It was possible to design a  strategy through talks and fairs with the support of a group of students and volunteer members from the Costa Rican Red Cross.
-Shells in the sea, not in your home: it fights the irrational extraction of inert materials from the beaches. It counted on the participation of 8 students from the Pacific. It is the first project that exposes this problem and proposes a solution through empowerment.
-COSA 2.0: Organizational, Socio-eviromental, Construction Project: Students from different careers managed to strengthen relations between El Sitio and Las Flores de Caño Negro in Upala of Alajuela. They are 2, close communities, but over the years they have had differences that have distanced their inhabitants.

-Paraíso cultivates art: Students from Paraíso motivated a group of Boy Scouts, elderly in a day center and at-risk youths to participate in dance, drawing, film and music workshops.

-The presence of the lionfish and its impact on the Costa Rican Caribbean: A community-engagement strategy: 4 students from Environmental Health worked in Cahuita to develop a process of knowledge and use of the lionfish, an invasive species in the Costa Rican Caribbean.
