3 pregnancies with Zika are under surveillance

Since the arrival of Zika in Costa Rica earlier this year, five cases of pregnant women with the virus have been reported.

One of them had an abortion in early fetal development stages, but authorities were unable to determine whether it was specifically related to Zika, since the woman was suffering from hypertension.

There was also one woman who gave birth a few weeks ago and the child was fortunately born without any problems.

The remaining three pregnant women from Jacó are under strict surveillance by the Ministry of Health, with weekly ultrasounds and consultation with specialists in gynecology and obstetrics.

To prevent other infections, the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS) allocated ¢160 million for the purchase of 29,000 repellents and canopies for beds to give to pregnant women from the most affected areas.

The latest epidemiological bulletin by the Ministry of Health shows that 20 new Zika cases were reported last week, bringing the total to 127 patients.
