600 people could lose their jobs in Barra del Colorado

A group of 600 people from Barra del Colorado could lose their jobs due to the expiration of the traditional trawling licenses and the impossibility of renewing them.

A decision of the Constitutional Chamber in 2013 determined that trawling licenses could not be renewed until the necessary mechanisms to make it sustainable are available, so that this fishing activity will become an illegal activity.

Due to this situation, it is expected that communal leader Jesús Chávez, a member of the Marine Network of Responsible Fisheries, and Esmeralda Chávez, representative of the shrimp peelers, go to Limón Commission and the Environment Committee of the Legislative Assembly to find a solution to the problem.

The goal of the fishermen is to support and approve the “Law for the Sustainable Use of Shrimp”, which aims the sustainable use of shrimp.
