7 kilometers of freeway for cyclists on Sundays

The proposal was drawn up by the mayors of Montes de Oca, La Unión and Curridabat with the idea of improving the quality of life of the residents.

The project aims to prohibit vehicle transit from the Fuente de la Hispanidad to Tres Ríos Park (7 kilometers) on Sundays. The street would be free for cyclists, joggers and public transport buses (on one track), from 4 a.m. to 12 at noon.

On Sundays, a lot of people go out to play sports, run, ride a bike… and we want this practice to have support from the authorities. The proposal already exists in many countries in Latin America, where priority is given to athletes at any given time,”

said Marcel Soler, Mayor of Montes de Oca.

All that is needed is the approval of the Ministry of Public Works and Transportation.

The administrator of the roads has to make the decision to authorize the incorporation of recreational and sporting uses in the street. It is a more political decision than a technical one, but we perceive a good attitude from the President and the Deputy Minister of Transport,”

said Edgar Mora, Mayor of Curridabat.

Alternate routes and the chosen schedule would avoid traffic jams in the area. The closures would be made with the help of barriers that prevent the transit.
