A bill aims to ban polluting cars in 2030

if a bill proposed by legislator Ronny Monge succeeds, the importation of vehicles that use hydrocarbons would be completely banned in 2030.

The initiative, which is processed under file 20,227, was presented by the legislator in a press conference on January 17th.

The project would also establish a tax ($ 500 per vehicle) to discourage the import of polluting cars from 2020 to 2030.

According to the text, from the fifth year the amount of the tax would double and the increase would be used to finance, through a trust of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MOPT), the replacement of buses of the coastal provinces by electric units.

The legislator recalled that Costa Rica produces 100% clean and renewable energy:

It’s time to make the decision and change.

The project would oblige public institutions to purchase electric vehicles from 2020, but since the entry into force of the law and that year, electric cars should be at least half of the cars purchased by the public sector.

According to the proposal, the National Banking System would have to allocate at least 25% of its financing lines for the acquisition of electric units.
