A bill aims to control insect-transmitted diseases

The government is evaluating, one more time, a bill that aims to control insect-transmitted diseases such as zika, dengue and chikungunya , among others.

Project 19.398 called “Law for the control of populations of insect vectors of diseases”, establishes sanctions for those who maintain breeding grounds for aedes aegypti and aedes albopictus mosquitoes.

If it became law, this would help the Ministry of Health to put a brake on people, companies and institutions that have been found, more than once, with active breeding sites.

Javier Cambronero, from Partido Acción Ciudadana (PAC), said that this project strengthens the Ministry of Health and it allows the possibility to work along with the Ministry and the Mmnicipalities to fight solid waste in order not to have more mosquitoes.

The project establishes fines from 42,000 to 212,000 colones to natural people who facilitate, maintain or permit the existence of mosquitoes breeding sites in properties that they own or are under their possession.

The official explained that eradicating Aedes aegypti mosquito is a very difficult task when dealing with Costa Rica, a tropical country, but it is easy to control as long as people are willing to do so.
