A commission will investigate a mother’s home birth death

The Physicians and Surgeons’ Public Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that it is about to start an investigation on a case filed earlier this year, in which mother’s home birth ended up in death.

Andrés Castillo Saborío, president of the entity, said that the investigation aims to find the mother’s reason to deliver at home. In addition, if there was proper prenatal control and monitoring, it will establish legal responsibilities for the illegal practice of the medical profession, among other aspects.

According to data provided by the institution, this is the first complaint in this matter presented to this department in the last three years.

The president stated that a high-level commission was formed, which will analyze home births.

The objective will be to determine the treatment, in private and public institutions, for this type of cases, and then to focus on the elaboration of a National Policy for Humanized Care at Birth, which will allow to have a correct approach to the situation.

The Commission will start working this month and it will be made up of three members of the College of Physicians, a representative of the Costa Rican Association of Obstetrics and Gynecology and doctors María Dolores Zarco López, Carlos Zúñiga Brenes, José Alberto Calderón Zúñiga, Rolando Moreno Calvo and Óscar Cerdas Salas.
