A gang used to steal coffee and replace it with sand

A gang that assaulted coffee export containers was dismantled by the Judicial Investigation Organization (OIJ).

Even though they intercepted containers carrying all kinds of merchandise, the coffee seed was the most wanted product due to its high market value. They were in Limón but they worked around the country. They directed their activities to any kind of product: appliances, food and coffee exports. They used to steal coffee and replaced it with sand and people who imported the product received that. As consequence, the country’s image was being affected.

The gang had 18 members, 13 of them were detained in the operation conducted by the OIJ. Their alleged leader was a man surnamed Acuña.
