They are known as murderous, violent dogs and they are usually called “children eaters”. However, according to Joanna Stafford, dogs, specially American Pit bulls, are her life.

She is a lawyer and for many years her love for animals led her to use her lunch hour to rescue abandoned dogs.

Nevertheless, 10 years ago she rescued and saved a dog that had been battered by its owner because it had lost a fight. As consequence, she decided to shelve her career and committed herself to save dogs that nobody wants to help and she created the American Stafford Organization in Costa Rica. Last year, the group received 392 cases of abused dogs, abandoned by their owners or used in dog fights.

Dog fights is common thing in Costa Rica. For every fight won, “most violent” dogs’ owners canwin up to one million colones in profits. So it is not weird that the breeding of Pitbull and American Stafford dogs is increasing.

Dogs do not want to tear legs and ears in the ring, but they are bred to do so,

declared Rueda.

This rescuer got used to live under threats. Even once, someone threw a molotov cocktail on her yard, as revenge for confiscating a fighting dog.

No matter if the animal was used for fights, or it bit someone or suffered abuse: any dog can be rehabilitated.

The organization’s goal is to eradicate dog fights at any cost. They have a number (8625-60 00) that people can use to report dog fights and they can get a reward of up to 1,500 dollars.
