A house collapsed due to the magnitude 5.5 earthquake

The quake, that was felt in several communities from Cartago, affected 14 houses, as reported by the National Emergency Commission (CNE).

One of them, in Juan Viñas de Jiménez, collapsed completely.

According to the institution, the magnitude 5.5 earthquake had its epicenter 2 kilometers east from Capellades de Cartago. However, more than 400 aftershocks of different magnitudes were reported.

In this regard, the Seismological and Vulcanological Observatory of Costa Rica (OVSICORI) reported that the most important aftershock occurred at 7:05 pm: it had a 4.3 magnitude.

OVSICORI informed that faults near Irazú volcano have had a seismic activity in recent years and in October, 2016 an earthquake swarm occurred in the west of Irazú; the recent quake occurred between Irazú and Turrialba volcanoes and it is possibly related to a north-south-direction fault.
