Amid the sadness over the tragedy that hurricane Otto caused in Costa Rica, a photo filled with hope the population.

A sloth’s photo, that was clinging to a tube went viral. With it, campaigns of faith and help were started due to the impact of the hurricane on Bagaces and Upala.

The author of that photograph is Miguel Rojas, a 36-year-old man from Guapiles. He didn’t imagine that a photo to keep a memory of the striking animal would become a national issue.

I took the picture on November 24th, at about 6 am, at La Rita de Pococí. I was heading to my job and there it was, clinging to the tube,

explained the man, who said that he only shared it in Instagram and sent it to two Whatsapp groups.

Hours late, he found out that the image had gone viral and it had even been in the media, something that surprised him, but the fact that they saw it as an emblem of hope and faith filled him with satisfaction.

Miguel explained that although remembering a tragedy is not pretty, he will remember that his action helped many people to find that sense of hope and help in the Costa Rican population.
