American Expatriate Costa Rica

A report states that child sex tourism is a serious problem in Costa Rica

Child sex tourism is a serious problem because sex tourists come mainly from the United States and Europe. By stating so, a report on trafficking, developed by the Department of US State, rubs salt on the wound.

The document, presented in mid-2016, was remembered once again after the sentence against David Frank Strecker, renowned American sex tourist known as ‘Cubadave’: he will serve a 5-year sentence in prison for promoting Costa Rica as a sex destination.

Although it is unknown whether Strecker had sexual contact with minors, prosecutors established that the subject documented sexual activities in Costa Rica in an effort to promote the country as a sex destination.

Knowing that it was a crime, he made invitations through his social accounts for foreigners to visit Costa Rica, to pay for ‘sexual satisfaction’. In addition, he published photographs of women in underwear in rooms, bars and places that are visited for the exercise of prostitution,

stated the prosecution.

‘Cubadave’ used Facebook and YouTube, among others, to publish his sexual activities. However, after several anonymous complaints, he was arrested in 2015.

The State Department recommended that ethical authorities develop more investigation rocesses against sex tourists.

In addition, it suggested strengthening the National Coalition Against the Smuggling of Migrants and Trafficking of People (CONATT).
