According to some legislators, Costa Rican government is ignoring the diplomatic traditions

Legislators Sandra Piszk, from Partido de Liberación Nacional (PLN), Rafael Ortiz, from Partido Unidad Social Cristiana (PUSC), and Otto Guevara, from Movimiento Libertario (ML) declared that the Government’s decision, headed by President Luis Guillermo Solís, of abandoning the UN General Assembly when Brazilian president Michael Temer was about to deliver his speech, reflects ignorance about the foreign policy and diplomatic tradition of Costa Rica.

Piszk said that she didn’t question whether the Parliament’s decision to depose Dilma Rousseff was correct or not, but according to her, people need to remember that this action is endorsed by the Brazilian Constitution.

We wonder what will the President say about Nicolas Maduro, who is preventing the referendum in Venezuela, which is also endorsed by the Venezuelan Constitution. So, you can use the Constitution for some things but not for others? And what about the dismissed legislators in Nicaragua?”

asked Sandra Piszk.

Rafael Ortiz said that Solís’ position contradicts Costa Rican foreign policy and supports the performance of the countries from the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA), which also left when Temer started his speech.

On the other hand, Edgardo Araya, from Frente Amplio, said that the president and the minister’s decision denote that they are consistent with their positions.

We must take into account that only the president and ministers left the assembly. The ambassador stayed there,

highlighted Araya .

He denied that Solís’ position follows any ideological reasons and insisted on questioning the way Temer became president of Brazil.

Solís’ decision caused a political uproar and prompted the Legislature to pass a motion to request an explanation from the minister of Foreign Affairs.
