Adventure tourists have new security regulations

Visitors who practice adventure tourism in the country will have new safety regulations that include requirements, recommendations and good practices for both service providers and users.

The Institute of Technical Standards of Costa Rica (Inteco) is launching three standards that are recognized worldwide and that can be used for the certification of services.

-INTE / ISO 20611: 2019. Adventure tourism – Good practices for sustainability – Requirements
and recommendations, this standard provides the requirements and recommendations for providers of adventure tourism activities on good practices for sustainability (environmental, social and economic aspects).

-INTE / ISO 21103: 2018. Adventure Turism. Information for participants, it specifies the minimum requirements for the information that must be provided to participants before, during and after adventure tourism activities.

-INTE / ISO 21101: 2019. Adventure tourism – Security management system – Requirements, it describes the requirements of a security management system for adventure tourism activity providers.

The three standards can be used by all types and sizes of adventure tourism activity providers, operating in different geographic and social environments. They are also very useful for the State, tourism chambers, travel agencies and tour guides, for their contribution to offer quality services,”

said Susana Picado, Inteco Standardization project manager.

Adventure tourism accounted for 58.1% of foreigner visits in the national territory for the 2016-2018 period.

The standards can be acquired at the Inteco Documentation Center, located in San Pedro, Montes de Oca.
