Alert against plastic sea off Honduran coast

Caroline Power- Facebook

An immense layer of floating plastic and polystyrene wastes alerted the inhabitants of the tourist islands of Roatan and Cayos on the Caribbean coast of Honduras.

Caroline Power, an American photographer living in the area, documented the visible consequences of this garbage pollution in an area near a reef zone.

According to the organization Blue Planet Society, it is presumed that all this waste arrives to the sea from a river that is born in Guatemala and that receives clandestine dumps and residues throughout its passage until the mouth. However, they have not been able to confirm this.

Horrible! We see many shocking images of environmental destruction. This is up there with the worst,”

wrote the group in its social networks.

According to research by the international conservation organization 5Gyres, the amount of plastic found in the oceans is enough to trace the way to the moon, back and forth, twice.

Five years ago the organization determined that there are more than 269,000 metric tons and 5.25 trillion plastic particles in the oceans, enough to travel that route.

Last September the photo of a seahorse clinging to a small cotton swab caused a commotion in social networks.

Justin Hofman, American photographer, was the one who captured the sad scene in the Indonesian sea. The animal went from being surrounded by crystalline blue waters to be around plastic, garbage and sewage waters.

According to scientific studies, by 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in the sea.
