Alvarado wants strike to be declared illegal

President Carlos Alvarado, will ask the Court to declare illegal the indefinite strike called by the unions on Monday.

The strike will affect people going to work, children who won’t go to school, people waiting for health treatments and surgeries, it will affect people’s effort to produce. So this strike is unjustified and improper. Besides, this type of strike is illegal and we will prove it in Court. With the government, I’ve taken measures to ensure that public order and basic services continue to work so that the impact on people is reduced,”

said Alvarado.

The unions are planning a strike to protest the fiscal project being discussed in the Legislative Assembly that establishes, among other things, a transformation of the sales tax into value added tax.

This country must continue to work and my government’s task is making sure of that. Each person counts, and this is the only way Costa Rica will move forward, which is why I invite you to take the path of historical responsibility. I trust in the commitment of thousands of public employees to show up for work, and I remind the leaders of the unions that the doors of my government are still open for dialogue,”

added the President.
