Appeal against Venezuelan magistrates was dismissed

The Venezuelan court dismissed an appeal challenging the appointment of 33 of its judges, presented by the attorney general, Luisa Ortega, who now opposes the government of Nicolás Maduro.

The Constitutional Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ) declared “inadmissible” the request made by the prosecutor, since they had already endorsed the designations in July 2016.

The TSJ, accused by the opposition of serving Maduro, cited this ruling to indicate that

any action that has the purpose of nullifying the appointment of magistrates, undermines the constitutional procedure for the removal of the judges and it’s prohibited.”

With that ruling, the court overturned an agreement approved by the current opposition majority in Parliament, which invalidated the appointments.

At that time, the TSJ also warned that those who favor acts against the designations were “subject to the corresponding criminal, civil and administrative responsibility.”
