Araya: “the Legislative Assembly is a reflection of our society”

Every four years the citizens go to the polls and vote for the favorite party without knowing for sure who are the figures that will be part of the Legislative Assembly.

However, as explained by political scientist Sergio Araya, these results show society’s diversity.

The Legislative Assembly is a space where Costa Rican society is reflected, these 57 legislators represent everyone to a greater or lesser extent: we find legislators who are deep in their analysis, others that are more emotional, there are some who do not think things over and the way people vote shows that,

Araya said.

In this context, political parties also have an important role in this situation, since the closed voting system gives them the direct responsibility to define what they will offer to citizens.

The level of social-political debate has declined, and nowadays, the front page is 5-minute-of-fame news, which makes appear more 5-minute-of-fame people.

According to Araya, although these job positions are temporary, situations are permanently institutionalized and that makes the Congress lose its power and influence.
