ARESEP canceled meeting with taxi drivers

General regulator Roberto Jiménez canceled the meeting planned along with taxi drivers. The Regulatory Authority for Public Services (ARESEP) was supposed to provide a report on its legal capacity to take action against illegal public transports, included Uber.

The reasons to justify ARESEP decision are summarized as follows:

-The laws, which empower ARESEP to punish those providing an illegal transport service, cannot be applied automatically, an administrative procedure is needed.

-The administrative procedures against public, illegal services will continue but they may not be issued because an institutionality study is being carried out.

-The possibility of imposing a precautionary measure has been consulted to the Attorney General of the Republic. However, ARESEP cannot answer taxi drivers’ requests yet.

Therefore, the meeting  was canceled. Once the institution has the required evidence, it will call a meeting.
