Following a series of inspections, the Regulatory Authority for Public Services (Aresep) found abnormalities in 62 gas stations out of a total of 346, located throughout Costa Rica. The irregularities are related to the presence of water or sediments (45 cases), changes in the temperature of inflammation (14), different from stated coloring (6), corresponds to the lower octane (4) and presence of sulfur (1), among others.
Abnormalities were highest in Alajuela province, with a total of 19 stations (27 percent). Guanacaste and Limon had the fewest problems.
In Alajuela, experts attribute the problem to a facility in La Garita that supplies the region.
ARESEP has initiated punitive administrative processes. These could result in fines ranging from ¢1.8 million to ¢7.2 million. Depending on the seriousness of the offense, station owners risk loss of their license.
