Authorities are building a retaining wall in Garabito

On October 19th, a video was released through social networks, where a citizen from Jacó in Garabito, Puntarenas, showed the erosion suffered by the coast, which it’s also affecting a boulevard in the center.

Mayor of Garabito, Tobías Murillo said that since last Monday they are conducting works in the area in order to build a 70-meter retaining wall, which prevents the strong waves from reaching businesses at the beach shore.

Murillo declared they are doing it due to a matter of protection.

Omar Lizano, from the Research Center in Marine Science and Limnology (CIMAR) from the University of Costa Rica (UCR), explained that this situation is also taking place in Esterillos, and it had been warned that it could also happen in Manuel Antonio, Quepos.

However, Warren Umaña, manager of the Technical Unit for Environmental Management from the Municipality of Quepos / Aguirre, said that they have no reports related to problems of coastal erosion at Manuel Antonio.
