Authorities are worried: the tropical depression became a storm

On November 21st, the National Emergency Commission (CNE) along with President Luis Guillermo Solís, requested the suspension of lessons at schools in Limón and Sarapiqui due to the possible problems in the Caribbean and North of the country related to storm Otto.

The tropical depression became Storm Otto and authorities had to make decisions such as giving a yellow alert throughout the country.

According to Juan Carlos Fallas, director of the National Meteorological Institute (IMN), the system remains stationary and it is still unknown the areas that will be affected by Otto.

Ivan Brenes, director of the CNE, declared that incidents in national roads have been addressed and there are more than 100 affected communities in the Caribbean and the Pacific.

In addition, President Luis Guillermo Solís urged people to remain calm and requested the population to be prepared. He also guaranteed the fast response of the emergency commissions.

The voluntary evacuation would be for the entire Caribbean coast and north of the country since high tides are expected to take place in the coming hours.

107 schools are closed.
