Authorities expect a significant reduction in the number of homicides and violence

4 of the most important criminal leaders are behind bars. As consequence, law enforcement authorities expect a significant reduction in the number of homicides and violence at least in some of the most vulnerable areas of the country.

“Pollo” and “El Indio” serve sentences due to drug trafficking. In addition, “Ojos Bellos”, along with his brother “Borrego” and “Gato Cole,” were also captured. Authorities think that conflicts among gangs will decrease.

Desamparados, Tres Ríos, Limón and southern San José were the territories fought by these gangs in order to win control over the drug sales.

Another important factor is the arrest of 22 people associated with El Pollo’s gang. All of them were part of a bloody group dedicated to traffick drug in Desamparados, Pavas, Alajuelita and La Unión.

However, it is well-known that the drug business will not disappear and criminal leaders are likely to try to control the sales from jail, because their leadership is not something that can be taken away.

2015 was the most violent year in the last decade with a total of 570 homicides. In addition, until October 20th, 2016 there were 447 violent deaths.

Leaders behind bars:

-Marco Antonio Jimenez, known as “El Indio”: he serves a 70-year sentence in prison for murders, organized crime and money laundering.
-Luis Ángel Martinez, known as “El Pollo”: sentenced to 34 years in prison in Nicaragua for drug trafficking and organized crime.
-Dinnier Estrada Jimenez, alias “Ojos Bellos”: arrested for murder and drug trafficking, awaiting trial for multiple crimes.
-Greivin Sanarrusia Estrada, alias “Borrego”: Captured for homicide and drug trafficking.
-Keylor Cole Kelly, alias “Gato Cole”: Arrested for attempted murder, money laundering and drug trafficking.
