Authorities on alert over waves of Venezuelans

Hundreds of Venezuelan citizens who were in Panama have been entering Costa Rica through Paso Canoas with the intention of renewing the tourist visa to return to the neighboring country. However, Panamanian authorities made the decision to reject some of them.

Faced with this, Costa Rican migration is on alert for a possible wave of Venezuelans, but for now there is a regular situation in the border post.

According to information by Presidential House, from February 25th to March 6th, there were 861 Venezuelans arrivals and 865 departures by Paso Canoas. In addition, there were 150 rejections, but these citizens have looked for other ways to leave, mainly by air.

To date, the migratory flow of Venezuelans on our borders remains normal. However, we have to analyze the situation regarding the visa for people of this nationality,”

says Gisela Yockchen, Director General of Migration.

The authorities have requested to meet with their partner in Panama to make decisions that allow a good management of any migratory situation that does not affect public order and national security.

According to migration, at the moment there are no Venezuelans stranded in Paso Canoas.
