Beware of the inappropriate use of platelet rich plasma to perform plastic surgery

The Association of Medical Specialists in Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery (AMECPER) launched an alert about the inappropriate use of platelet rich plasma that is being promoted in different aesthetic properties as a treatment for rejuvenate, lose weight, shape the body and increase breasts or buttocks. They are dangerous when there are not well applied, infections are very likely to take place and in the worst scenario if the patient has an undiagnosed malignant tumor, it can worsen.

Platelet rich plasma is taken from the same patient’s blood through a centrifuge process that can take a concentrated platelet, that are part of the growth hormone, generating biostimulation in those areas where it is placed and facilitating healing.

Quesada explained that one of its uses is to improve orthopedic bone paste for minor bleeding processes in plastic surgery for healing and  in aesthetic level, it is used as a stimulant of elastic fibers in the skin. The latter means that it improves skin quality in terms of brightness, firmness and it corrects some minor wrinkles. In the case of lipofilling, either in buttocks or face level, it allows greater durability. Logically, this procedure must be performed by a physician duly incorporated to the College of Physicians, ideally a dermatologist or a plastic surgeon.
