BN will close Uber bank accounts based on presidential orders

Banco Nacional stated that the closure of Uber driver accounts is based on guideline N ° 082 – P issued by President Luis Guillermo Solís on August 3rd, where he assures that the service provided by Uber drivers is not legal.

Since this activity has been declared by different instances as non-legal, the bank proceeds to apply due process and deregister related products,”

said the bank.

But Communication Minister Mauricio Herrera said President Solís did not give the order.

While it is true Solís did not ask to close the bank accounts, the directive issued clearly indicates to

monitor, review and punish those who provide remunerated transport for people, without the corresponding authorizations and in any other way contrary to the law.”

The deputy manager of the National Bank, Maximiliano Araya, said that since Uber is an illegal activity, the regulations of the bank determine that accounts or accounts that receive money from these services cannot be managed with that company.
