American Expatriate Costa Rica

Can Costa Rica help Venezuela?

The Government and the Foreign Ministry have issued different criteria, condemning what has happened in Venezuela in recent weeks. Costa Rica also signed a document with 10 other countries in Latin America to condemn the deaths of civilians and to call for dates for the elections.

Can Costa Rica do more than this?

Authorities are emphatic in affirming thay Costa Rican can’t do anything else, so it should be limited to giving condemnatory statements and support the intentions of other countries.

This would include requesting the application of the Inter-American Democratic Charter of the Organization of American States (OAS) to sanction Venezuela, which would bring political and economic conflicts; however, the Government has preferred not to do so.

As consequence, the country will keep an eye on what is happening in the South American country, hoping that democracy will emerge and conflicts start to disappear.

In recent days, Costa Rica has been more critical on the events taking place in Venezuela, which even drew criticism from the country’s Foreign Affair minister Delcy Rodríguez, who described Costa Rica as “a terrible example of human rights”, as well as the 10 other countries that signed the document.
