The National Network of Care and Child Development is a flagship projects for the administration of President Laura Chinchilla, and to date has opened 18 centers. The government now hopes to open 30 more centers within the next four months, in a program which to date has cost 30 billion colones ($60 million) for infrastructure and equipment.

Each center serves children from families in poverty and vulnerable social conditions, and provides nutrition, preschool education, and 10 hour day care.
