The Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS) called on parents to check if their children have the measles vaccine.
María del Rocío Sáenz, the executive president of the CCSS, said that there is an outbreak of measles in Europe, caused in part by low vaccination coverage.
The main advice is that parents and caregivers check if children have the complete vaccination schedule and verify that they have received the measles vaccine and its respective reinforcement,”
said Sáenz.
The basic scheme of vaccines offered by the CCSS has protection against measles, which is administered to children at 15 months of age, followed by a reinforcement at the beginning of the school stage.
This is an infectious disease caused by a virus, which is easily transmitted person to person and produces red rashes with spots on the skin.
The rash often starts in the head and extends to the rest of the body and may be accompanied by fever, cough, runny nose, conjunctivitis, feeling of pain and discomfort, and small white spots inside the mouth. In addition, in the case of young children, measles can be serious and cause pneumonia, inflammation of the brain and even death.
