Chavismo asks justice to assess mental health of Venezuelan Attorney General

The chavista bench in the Venezuelan parliament has asked justice to assess the mental health of Attorney General Luisa Ortega, claiming that she is out of her mind and should be dismissed, amid an open confrontation with the government.

I request the creation of a medical board, which is the responsibility of the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ). It is obvious that this lady is not in her right mind,”

lawmaker Pedro Carreño told reporters on Tuesday after filing the petition.

Ortega recently asked the TSJ -accused of serving the government- to annul the process for a Constituent Assembly led by President Nicolás Maduro and to authorize the prosecution of eight of its judges, as they have violated the Constitution.

Carreño had announced the request for medical assessment last week and even recommended the “confinement” of the prosecutor because

she could lead Venezuela to a civil war.”

But such a process for officials is not provided by the Venezuelan law and, in any case, the parliament -which is ruled by the opposition- is the only body empowered to dismiss the prosecutor, explained former magistrate Blanca Rosa Mármol.

The prosecutor began distancing herself from the government at the end of March, when she unexpectedly denounced that a decision with which the TSJ assumed the functions of the parliament was a breaching the constitutional order.

Government officials have since branded her as treacherous and unworthy.
