American Expatriate Costa Rica

Cheap can be expensive if you buy online

Shopping online can save you a lot of money … or maybe not?

While Chinese sites gain ground because of their low prices, the money you pay is not the only cost you should consider. For example: did you take into account the value of the shipment? And what will you have to pay in taxes? Or how much will it cost to return the item if you do not like or it doesn’t fit?

Before surfing one of these sites, make sure that the company has policies of guarantee, return, and coverage for loss, theft or damage.

To avoid surprises, before completing the purchase check that the final price already includes taxes.

According to the Ministry of Finance items such as cosmetics, food, medicine, cleaning products or personal care require a special permit that can cost $10 or more.

Also, note the cost of taxes:

Notebooks (13%)
Cell phones (13%)
Perfumes (29.95%) (require special permission)
Men, women and children’s clothing (29.95%)
Tablets (13%)
Cosmetics (29.95%) (require special permission)
Shoes (29.95%)

And how much will it cost to bring it to Costa Rica?
