Cocaine smuggling group condemned

Four people were sentenced for integrating a gang that was trafficking cocaine in heavy trucks to Nicaragua.

According to Deputy Prosecutor for Organized Crime, the sentence was handed down on Monday by the Criminal Court of Liberia.

It was established that a gang formed a criminal organization dedicated to international transport of cocaine through the use of hidden compartments in heavy trucks.

Therefore, the group leader, named Fonseca Vega, was sentenced to 16 years in prison. His son-in-law and right-hand man, Herrera Castro, received a sentence of 15 years, while a chauffeur and coordinator of drug transports, Alfaro Barrantes and Corea Salazar, were sentenced to 10 and 8 years in prison, respectively.

In addition, four other people, who pleaded guilty, were also sentenced in an abbreviated process: Sánchez Gamboa received 9 years in prison, while Madrigal Cascante, Chinchilla González and Valverde Moya were sentenced 8 years in prison each.

The prosecution succeeded in proving that the accused trafficked cocaine by land to Nicaragua and other Central American countries. Between August 2013 and November 2014, 817 kilos of cocaine hydrochloride and $ 440,861 were confiscated.
