Companies take on the challenge of hiring people with disabilities

Marco Montero López from Taco Bell

Marco Montero learns slowly and he forgets things, but his spirit to work make him an exceptional employee. He arrived at Taco Bell to prepare meals but today, six years later, he is a cashier in one of the restaurants.

Montero is one of the 65 people with disabilities working in this food chain. According Randall Bravo, manager of human resources, the initiative to hire people with disabilities was born 10 years ago.

That idea is called “Inclusion Without Boundaries” and it started in 2008, with 4 employees. Today they are 11% of the payroll of this company.

-50% have a hearing impairment.
-48% have a cognitive disability.
-2% have a physical disability.

However, this percentage is rarely repeated little in other companies in the country.

According to Martha Zamora, National Director of Social Security of the Ministry of Labor,

the opportunities we can open are always challenges, because they have been a population historically excluded from work.”

Another of the major challenges is compliance with Law 8862, which states that all public institutions must reserve 5% of their vacancies for people with disabilities.

The Ministry of Labor works with training and workshops on the employment inclusion of people with disabilities.

Some 250 people have found a job in the last five years.
