Congress elects 12 substitute judges for Court IV

The Legislative Assembly elected 12 substitute magistrates for the Constitutional Chamber on Wednesday. In the second round, the following candidates proposed by the Judicial Branch were elected:

Martha Esquivel: 39 votes.
Anamari Garro Vargas: 42 votes.
María Lucila Monge Pizarro: 40 votes.
Ana María Picado Brenes: 39 votes.
Hubert Fernández Argüello: 44 votes.
Alejandro Delgado Faith: 39 votes.

The other candidates did not get the minimum 38 votes needed, so a third round was held. This time, these legislators were elected:

Jorge Araya García: 41 votes.
José Hernández Gutiérrez: 38 votes.
Ronald Salazar Murillo: 39 votes.
Alicia Salas Torres: 44 votes.
Mauricio Chacón Jiménez: 42 votes.
Ileana Sánchez Navarro: 44 votes.

The new magistrates, six men and six women, will be sworn in by the Legislative Plenary on Thursday. The Judiciary proposed 24 candidates, but the Congress Appointments Commission recommended 12. However, the Legislative Plenary made the election from a list of 20 candidates.

The Congress had the deadline of December 16th to elect substitute judges.
