By majority, the Legislative Assembly rejected a proposal by Pedro Muñoz, from the Christian Social Unity Party (PUSC), to include education in the list of essential services that are banned from holding strikes.
Legislators agreed to maintain the current proposal that consists in limiting the duration of strikes in the education sector to a term of 21 consecutive calendar days or 10 discontinuous calendar days.
In the text, education is considered a strategic service and strikes are allowed for that period.
Once this period is over, the educators will have to return to work, but if there is no agreement, the conflict must be resolved by other means, such as arbitration.
Education was excluded from the list of essential services due to an agreement between unions and legislators.
