Consumers against new medical rates

The Free Consumers Association (ACL) has gained support for its fight against the new medical fees approved by the College of Physicians and Surgeons, which increases the costs of surgical procedures by 300%

On Monday, ACL and Consumer Costa Rica will announce a number of organizations that joined to support the appeal presented to the Constitutional Court last June 27th against the new prices.

The support is presented a few days before the College of Physicians finishes an analysis on the new fees, which it agreed to make due to the popular dissatisfaction.

Health professionals indicated that the decision to have a quarterly extension seeks to ensure that when the new rates come into force, the general population and the medical profession have no questions, but they did not ensure thy will decrease the costs.

Following complaints and disagreements due to the new medical rates, several deputies in the Legislative Assembly proposed a bill to eliminate the authority that the College of Physicians and Surgeons has for setting health services rates.

According to the plan, the rates are to be defined by the supply and demand for services, but price limits to avoid affecting consumers could be established.
