Corella introduced a bill to modify Article 202 of the Electoral Code

Franklin Corella, member of Partido Acción Ciudadana (PAC), urged the enactment of a bill that aims to eliminate age as a tiebreaking criterion in elections.

The legislator asked the Executive to include the initiative in the current special session of the Congress, which will end on August 31st.

The bill, promoted by Corella, intends to change Article 202 of the Electoral Code, which establishes age as a key factor to break ties in elections for mayoralties, city halls or receiverships.

According to the proposal, in case of a tie, they need to call for a runoff on the first Sunday of the following month. If the tie continues, the winner will be chosen by flipping a coin.

The proposal was introduced after municipal elections in February, in which candidates from Partido Liberación Nacional (PLN) and Nueva Generación tied in Nandayure mayoralty.

The Supreme Electoral Court (TSE) chose the winner following Article 202.
