Costa Rica and Brazil team up for a position in the UN Human Rights Council

Costa Rica and Brazil will make a diplomatic dumbbell to desqualify Venezuela in the competition that the three countries face to take over two seats in the Human Rights Council of the Organization of the United Nations (UN).

This Monday, the chancellor of the Republic, Manuel Ventura, said that this is one of the strategies that both nations value in the face of the election that will be held on October 17th at the UN general assembly in New York.

Ventura said that Brazil is already even promoting a “team candidacy” and that the country’s negotiations are being directed towards managing support with countries.

To achieve one of the two positions, Costa Rica needs at least 97 votes.

The chancellor explained that the government will not allocate extra resources to win this election and that it will not send diplomatic personnel to negotiate votes. He mentioned that this week all the country’s embassies around the world and their diplomatic missions will be instructed to promote the country for this position.

Ventura was optimistic, although several analysts and political scientists say that the urgency and closeness of the election are aspects that do not play in favor of the country.

In case the country is elected, the ambassador in Geneva, Elayne White, will be the one who assumes the representation before the Human Rights Council.
