Costa Rica asks Nicaragua to suspend civilian repression

The Costa Rican government called on Nicaragua to suspend repression against the civilian population, students, and the press.

By means of a press release issued by the Foreign Ministry, the government said that it has been observing the latest events that have taken place in the neighboring nation since April 18th and that, according to a preliminary report of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) have led to more than 76 deaths of civilians, hundreds of injured, and a large number of people arrested.

The vice president and chancellor, Epsy Campbell, said that the government is closely monitoring the conflict to take appropriate measures in case of migratory pressures that imply a response in the country.

The Costa Rican Foreign Ministry also said that it has been monitoring the various efforts of dialogue and mediation promoted by the Episcopal Conference, between the Nicaraguan government and other social actors, in order to find, through a democratic process, a peaceful solution to the crisis.

Costa Rica observes with attention the accomplishment of the different sessions of dialogue between the students, the civil society, and the government. Likewise, it appreciates that the National Dialogue Committee adopted the recommendations of the preliminary report of the IACHR on May 21st, 2018, which includes the preliminary observations of the work visit carried out between the 17th and the 21st days of May,”
