Costa Rica calls for human rights to be respected in Nicaragua

The decree that made changes in the benefits of Nicaragua’s pension system produced dozens of clashes in the streets of that country in the last two days, and also a reaction from the Government of Costa Rica.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that it closely observes what is happening in the northern nation and calls on the authorities to respect human rights. This was stated by Christian Guillermet, General Director of Foreign Policy.

The official asked for respect so that the situation can be solved through dialogue. The Foreign Ministry added that it is important to preserve social peace and asked the Government of Nicaragua not to close certain means of communication.

The reduction of pensions, the increase of the quotas and the tax of 5% to the retirements angered dozens of people who took to the streets and clashed with the police.

In addition, the government of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo removed at least two media outlets from the air. Journalists and leaders affirm that they were reporting the events that take place in the streets.
