Costa Rica celebrates first day of condom use promotion

On Monday morning, authorities celebrated the first day of promoting the use of the female and male condom, and the water-based lubricant.

Since 2011, Costa Rica has had a policy of sexual health, which seeks to provide the elements for the safe exercise of sexual rights.

The decree to promote condom and water-based lubricant opens a space to talk about the importance of these inputs in the exercise of the right to a timely, pleasant and responsible sexuality,”

said Gabriela Solano, specialist in sexology and use of the female condom.

Kathya Gosser, from Student Life of the Ministry of Public Education (MEP), commented that educational centers are, above all, protective centers.

A place where we can transmit cultural capital, which is often the only one that some children and adolescents have,”

said Grosser. The spokeswoman observed that the courses of affectivity and sexuality recently reformed come to complement other subjects, so that the minors have a comprehensive sexual education.

The Executive Decree emphasizes the right of the entire population to enjoy a safe and informed sexual life. It also calls on all public authorities to promote the correct and systematic use of condoms in the national territory.

Studies indicate that one in five men have never been taught how to use a condom. In addition, 80% of women who used the female condom say they liked it, but urge truthful and scientific information about its use.

Karen Mayorga, Minister of Health, mentioned that over the last few years health care has been taken over by sexual health care, but there has been no progress in the way it was intended.
