Costa Rica respects and welcomes report on LGTBI population

The Costa Rican Government “welcomes, respects and abides by” the report of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (CIDH) revealed on Tuesday on the rights of the LGTBI population in the country.

Vice-president Ana Helena Chacón said in a press conference that as of this moment the government studies the complete report with the purpose of turning guidelines that adhere to it. In addition, the defender of the inhabitants, Montserrat Solano, indicated that the document is of mandatory compliance.

The report establishes that the State must guarantee same-sex couples the rights enjoyed by heterosexual couples, including marriage. It also indicates that those who want it may change their name, gender and photo in relation to their self-perception, without any medical or psychological diagnosis.

Both Chacón and Solano celebrated this report that begins to settle a “historical debt” with the LGTBI population.
