Costa Rica returns to SICA

The Government of Costa Rica announced its return to the Central American Integration System (SICA), after member countries committed to work on strengthening a “serious, robust and transparent” integration system. One of the conditions of the return was a report with staff salaries and income from all SICA units.

Costa Rica stepped away from the system in protest at the refusal from other countries to cooperate in finding a solution last year’s immigration crisis, when 8,000 Cubans were stranded in Costa Rican territory due to Nicaragua’s decision to close its borders.

Guatemala and Belize did not want to help at first and finally, El Salvador, Guatemala and Mexico accepted the migrants in their territories earlier this year.

Deputy foreign minister Solano added that the system should tackle

the political, social and economic challenges in the region in a more efficient and effective way.”
