Costa Rica separates from Brazil for the UN election

A few hours before the election of two new members for the Human Rights Council of the United Nations (UN), the government of Carlos Alvarado denied the strategy announced last week by the Foreign Ministry to get one of these positions.

Although the Foreign Minister of the Republic, Manuel Ventura, said that the country would “team up” with Brazil to get both positions and eliminate Venezuela, on Wednesday, President Alvarado denied there was a joint as stated by its Minister of Foreign Affairs.

On October 7th, Ventura said that the pair with Brazil would be ideal and said that the Brazilians had expressed it.

A few hours before the election different sectors and the ethical guarantors questioned this alliance with Brazil alleging that the Brazilian government of Jair Bolsonaro contradicts the ideals of a respectful, inclusive and non-discriminatory democracy.

Costa Rica’s particular candidacy has to do with the fact that there is a disagreement with Venezuela being part of that committee. From the previous statements it was extrapolated, but there is only one understanding that Costa Rica’s interest is the defense of human rights, particularly when Venezuela is a candidate,”

said Alvarado on Wednesday.

Alvarado said he feels confident that the country will reap good results and be elected, which requires 97 votes.
