Costa Rica now holds the Pro Tempore Presidency of the Regional Conference on Migration (CRM). This body made up of Belize, Canada, Costa Rica, the United States, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama and the Dominican Republic was created in 1996 and seeks greater effectiveness in addressing migration flows in the region.
The country received the Presidency in the framework of the XXIV vice-ministerial meeting of the CRM, held in Guatemala.
At the meeting, the authorities reviewed the development of the 2019-2022 Strategic Plan, as part of a relaunching of its management in relation to issues such as human rights protection, integration and link with development.
The agency is supported by international organizations such as the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the International Labor Organization (ILO), International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the United Nations Children’s Organization (UNICEF), the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). The Regional Network of Civil Organizations for Migration (RROCM) participated in the meeting.
Throughout its Presidency in this organization Costa Rica will host a series of specialized meetings on migration, among which the II Regional Congress on Women in the context of migration “Women in Migration: Gender, Human Rights and Empowerment. Challenges and Perspectives,” which will take place from December 3rd to 5th, 2019, in San José, with the support of IOM.
Throughout 2020, the Costa Rican PPT will celebrate 25 years of the CRM in 2020 and organize workshops on security, public policies and migration governance, migratory health.
The XXV Vice Ministerial Meeting of the CRM will be held the week of November 15th to 21st, 2020, in Costa Rica.
